Wednesday Update from GCN

Pastor Brian Schafer

Jan 4, 2023

Hi Church Family,

Someone recently asked me for recommendations for a bible reading plan for the year. I think it’s a great idea! There is nothing like daily rooting ourselves into the story of God, the Scriptures. There is no shortage of plans out there and, from my perspective, as long as you are turning daily to God’s Word, I don’t think you can go wrong. If you don’t already have a bible reading plan and you’re looking to get started, I would recommend the Daily Lectionary readings. If you’ve been around our church for a while you know that we tend to come back to these readings often. In fact, most preaching is pulled from one or all of the lectionary texts around here between Advent through Pentecost. Probably the biggest reason I recommend this is because it not only connects us daily with God’s Word, it also connects us daily with brothers and sisters in Christ all around the world. People in every continent are joining together and reading these same texts. We always need more things like this that both point us back to Jesus and point us back to the mission of God in the world, the church.

So, there you have it: a little recommendation from Pastor Brian.

We’re still in the beginning days of 2023, so let me offer this encouragement: Make a decision today to create habits in your life that make it more likely for you to be pointed to the Way of Jesus. Here are some tried and true practices:

  • Find space to daily connect with the Word of God. Even if it’s the audio bible on your way to work, it is a practice that roots us into the formational story of a God who has come to us.
  • Create space in your day to be still and listen for God. 1 minute is better than zero minutes.
  • Prioritize gathering in community with people who are trying to follow Jesus. This happens at 10:30am on Sundays!
  • Practice serving as a rhythm to your week or month.

It’s not a prescription and it’s not legalism. It’s an invitation into practices that point us to the Way of Jesus.

Looking forward to worshiping with you this Sunday at 10:30!

Pastor Brian
